Below there is a list of topic areas and readily available presentations. ALL presentations, whether in a workshop or seminar format can be customized to meet the needs of the particular audience. DIVERSITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
Building Communities of Respect
One of the cornerstones of a successful community is respect for the diversity of participants. Diversity is not just about race and ethnicity; we need to build a community that respects varied opinions, values, behaviors, and world views. But in all contexts true respect is easier said than done. We will identify the intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of culture and will define basic concepts and theoretical contributions to a definition of culture. A fun and challenging activity will engage participants to understand how our personal values are evolving constructs. Then participants will define the building blocks of a culture of respect and work on a plan for implementation.
2 – 4 hour options
|Identity and Oppression|
Define diversity and look at the relationship between diversity and social justice. Learn about stereotypes and identify the different types of oppression. Focus on personal identity. Learn to work with prejudice (your own and others’.)
|Politically Correct or Politically Smart? Crossing cultural bridges|
Learn about culture, community values, communication, culture shock, and acculturation. Investigate critical incidents in crosscultural encounters.
|In Your Face: Using Gestures and Space in Communication|
Learn about the use of gestures, space, and other non-verbal cues in intercultural communication.
1.5 – 2 hours
|Effective Allies: Privilege, Power, and Identity|
To create safe spaces for our students, clients, and other constituents, we need to learn to be effective allies and advocates. But what is an ally? We start by working on the components of our own identity and interrogating the interaction between our identity and theirs. Then we learn to identify privilege and positionality before we consider the characteristics of an ally and work on identifying a possible plan of action.
|Reclaiming the Immigration Conversation: Immigrant Stories and Identity|
In a highly charged rhetorical environment, it is important to reclaim the immigrant/refugee conversation. We start by listening to stories of immigration, resilience, and hope. We learn the history of the system as it informs the discussion, and we discuss 5 research-based strategies to move the conversation away from negativity and misinformation.
This engaging and moving workshop starts with participants invited to share personal or known stories of immigration. This allows to build a common ground with today’s immigrants. In the classroom, these stories are used for reading and writing instruction and to validate student/participant identity.

Literacy is a condition for success an, in fact, it is the first step for developing employability skills. In the 21st century, it is not enough to learn to read and write; literacy requires requires knowledge in a variety of areas of endeavor.
